Environmental impact from own operations

Hafslund works actively to reduce energy consumption in its own properties and has a stated aim of cutting environmental impact from the Group’s own transport operations.

Property management

Hafslund ownsor rents a number of properties in Oslo, Akershus and Østfold. Some of these are sublet to external tenants. In 2012, Hafslund used around 31,000 m2 itself. Energy consumption in these properties totalled approx. 7.1 GWh, of which 0.8 GWh was district heating from the Group’s own production.
Work is currently underway to reduce energy consumption in Hafslund’s properties even further. Increased energy monitoring is an important tool in this regard. Hafslund’s own system, Hafslund Online, is used for this purpose, and efficient utilisation of space in the Group’s properties is another important measure.

The company’s head office at Drammensveien 144 has been certified as an Environmental Lighthouse, and the conference centre at Hafslund Manor was awarded corresponding certification in 2012.

Transport and communication

The company’s head office in the Skøyen district of Oslo is located close to a major public transport hub served by trains, buses and trams. This allows many of the office staff to take public transport to and from work. The number of parking spaces is very limited.

In 2012, the Hafslund Group owned a fleet of around 100 vehicles as well as 20 electric vehicles. The Group has set up a pool of electric vehicles for staff to use to travel to and from meetings. This helps reduce their use of their own vehicles. In all, the volume of petrol and diesel used by the Hafslund vehicle fleet in 2012 amounted to around 100,000 litres. Many employees use their own vehicles for business trips. Fuel consumption for this purpose has been calculated at around 50,000 litres in 2012.

The estimated CO2 emissions associated with air travel by Group employees total around 160 tonnes.

One of the Group’s stated aims is to reduce environmental impact from transport. Staff are encouraged to use telephone or video conferencing options where possible in practice. Hafslund has good facilities for this, and the equipment is used regularly – particularly for contact between head office and subsidiaries.

Strict and specific environmental requirements are applied to the purchase of new vehicles. An initial needs analysis is intended to ensure that the vehicle chosen is not over-dimensioned. The purchaser is then encouraged to choose an eco-friendly option that covers the actual transport requirement, preferably an electric car.

ICT

In 2012, Hafslund continued its work in the field of “green IT”. The principal objective of this work is to reduce the number of physical data servers through virtualisation, as not only is this a more economical solution, but it also reduces the need for electricity and cooling. The number of virtual servers has increased in relation to 2011.

Purchased services

Hafslund is a major purchaser of a variety of services in the fields of transport, logistics and construction. The Nett, Varme and Produksjon departments are all significant players in this context, through comprehensive construction work, for example, even in central areas. Construction activities generate environmental impact in the form of noise and local pollution. Hafslund strives to carry out this work as carefully as possible and also attempts to provide good information to all parties involved. In many cases, these operations are actually necessary to reduce environmental impact in the medium to long term. For example, the work may involve burying district heating pipes or upgrading the power grid.
